11.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計算機程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.
(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To make people laugh.
B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?
A.The shortage of labor force.
B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
C.The encouragement of government.
D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?
A.Black boxes always go wrong.
B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.組卷:9引用:1難度:0.6 -
12.A newly discovered planet looks just right for life as we know it,according to an international group of astronomers.Orbiting a star about 500 light-years away, the planet called Kepler-186 f is about the same size as Earth. It orbits its star at the right distance for liquid water on the surface. That is a necessary condition for life as we know it.
But it is not exactly like Earth,NASA planetary scientist Elisa Quintana said. "It's more of an Earth's cousin. It's not an Earth's twin.It shares the same characteristics as Earth, but their parent stars are very different," said Quintana.
Kepler-186 f orbits a star that is smaller and cooler than our sun. But,writing in the journal Science, the astronomers say the planet appears to be a closer relative than most of the hundreds of others discovered so far. Some are massive gas-covered giants with thick, crushing atmospheres.Others orbit too close to their stars and are too hot for life.
Two planets discovered last year are in the right orbit and might be good candidates for life,Quintana says, but they are a bit bigger than Earth. "For the first time,we can actually say we now have a planet that is both Earth-sized and orbits in its star's habitable zone," she said.
It may be the first time, but it probably is not the last, says Massachusetts Institute of Technology astrophysicist Sara Seager. "We've been waiting decades to understand how common habitable planets might be,and it's looking like they're really common. And this gives us excitement and motivation to take the next step," said Seager.
The next step would be to look for signs of life in the atmospheres of these distant worlds. That would take a more sophisticated (高端的;復雜的) space telescope. But budget cuts threaten that mission, says University of California at Los Angeles astrophysicist Ben Zuckerman, "In principle,we could do this in the next few decades. But in practice, because there's no money,it's not gonna happen. It's not gonna happen in my lifetime, for example."
Leaving earthbound concerns behind,NASA's Elisa Quintana believes that when the next-generation space telescope is launched,it will find that we are not alone in the universe.
(1)What does the underlined word "That" (Paragraph 1)refer to
A.The right distance.
B.Liquid water.
C.The right size.
D.A star.
(2)According to Elisa Quintana,Kepler-186 f
A.is more of an Earth's cousin than an Earth's twin
B.has a lot in common with Earth, including their parent stars
C.is a lot bigger than Earth
D.is smaller and cooler than our sun
(3)Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Where there is water, there is life
B.A planet exactly like Earth found
C.Life discovered on Kepler-186 f
D.New Earth-size planet found組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
13.The forest of today will not be the forests of tomorrow.Rising temperatures, trees being cut down, development and climate-change-caused disasters are changing the very makeup of the Earth's forests, new research published in Science finds.
Older, bigger trees are being lost at an alarming rate, making the planet's forests shorter and younger. The change is being driven at different rates by different causes in different places, the study's authors say,but the consequences will be global.
Old growth forests absorb and store massive amounts of climate-warming CO2.They provide habitats for rare and endangered species and promote rich biodiversity.Researchers found that the world lost roughly one-third of its old growth forests between 1900 and 2015.In North America and Europe, they found that tree mortality(死亡率) has doubled in the past 40 years.
"Warming temperatures, wildfires, logging and insect outbreaks were among the many causes of the decline," says Nate McDowell, the study's lead author. "What's perhaps more concerning is that the trajectory(發展軌跡) of all these disturbances is generally increasing over time and is expected to continue increasing in the future." he says.
McDowell's focus is on how trees are affected by rising temperatures, arguably the biggest driver of forest change. To get a broader understanding of how forests are changing globally,he brought in more than 20 other researchers in different fields.Together, they examined more than 160 previous studies about tree mortality and its global causes, applying current satellite data and modeling to create a look at the Earth's changing forests to date.
"It's not a shock, but it's very sad," says Kristina,an ecologist and leader of the ForestGEO Ecosystems &Climate Program who helped with the research. "We as a human society are hitting these forests so rapidly with so many different changes that they can't keep up." she says.
(1)What can we know from the figures in the paragraph 3?
A.More trees should be planted in no time.
B.We are losing old growth forests quickly.
C.Forests are important habitats for wildlife.
D.Different trees can absorb CO2 differently.
(2)What can we say about McDowell's research?
A.Timely and long-standing.
B.All-sided and careful.
C.Time-limited and regional.
D.Traditional and extensive.
(3)What's Kristina's attitude towards the findings of the research?
A.Worried.
B.Optimistic.
C.Supportive.
D.Indifferent.
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A.To call on people to plant more trees.
B.To discuss the influence of climate change.
C.To warn against the loss of old growth forests.
D.To compare forests of today with those of the future.組卷:0難度:0.6 -

18.閱讀下面短文,根據所給情節進行續寫,使之構成一個完整的故事。
I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs.He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time,I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately,in the summer vacation before senior high school,my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips,so she couldn't take care of the garden.I didn't want my father to worry.I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered.I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often,so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning,my father said to me, "Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked.Let's have a salad today!" I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad,my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen.I was embarrassed and admitted, "Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster.I don't want to disappoint him,so I went to the store and bought some vegetables." My mother smiled, saying, "Honey, you know what is the right thing to do."
My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.______
Feeling guilty,I decided to do the right thing.______組卷:54引用:7難度:0.5 -
