18.It is often said, "You can't live only on air." But now the Chinese scientists can tell you:Maybe you can. Recently, some Chinese scientists have developed a new technique (技術).They turned CO2,one of the main greenhouse gases, into starch (淀粉). Starch is the main part of flour (面粉),rice and corn that we eat every day.Usually,it's created by plants with CO2,water and sunlight.According to the team's director Ma Yanhe,it takes the plants nearly 60 steps to produce starch. But now,the team, after six years of hard work, has found a simpler way to do this, with only 11 steps. "Our study shows that creating something like starch is possible in a lab,and this technology may be helpful in many areas." said Ma. The scientists first turned CO2 and hydrogen (氫氣) into methanol (甲醇).Then they pieced (分解) these methanol molecules (分子) into bigger and more complex (復雜的) molecules. Finally the starch was produced. This method makes it possible to produce food in factories, replacing traditional farming. This will not only help make plenty of food, but also save water and land.It may also help recycle CO2 to deal with climate (氣候) change, according to China Daily. The study can be helpful in space, too.Astronauts may no longer need to worry about their food as they travel in space. They may simply turn the CO2 they breathe out into the food they eat!

28.Most of us use alarm clocks to wake up at the right time for school or work.We look at our watches to know the right time for the bus or train. However, there is also the right time to eat, sleep, exercise, and take medicine. We can't look at a clock for the right time for these activities. We must listen to the clock inside our bodies:the biological clock. Barbara Wells exercised every morning. She woke up at 6:00 a.m.She ran about two miles before she went to work. But Barbara's legs and back started to hurt. She did some exercise before she ran.But her legs and back still hurt. She ran slower, but the pain didn't stop.Barbara talked to her doctor. The doctor said, "Don't run in the morning.Try to exercise later in the day. That is the time when your body is at the right temperature for exercise after work." She tried to exercise later in the day.Her legs and back didn't hurt anymore. Today, doctors are learning more about chronobiology(生物鐘學),the study of biological(生物的)clocks. They are learning about the importance of time for our bodies. For example,it is best for people to go to sleep on time every night and to eat only when they're hungry. Also, doctors discovered that some illnesses, such as heart attacks, occur(發生)most often in the morning. This information tells them that the best time to take heart medication may be at night. When patients take heart medication(藥物)at night, they may prevent a heart attack in the morning. Many doctors believe chronobiology(生物鐘學)can help us live healthier lives. It may be the right time to listen to these doctors!
